A billion and counting but not one who can win a medal in sports

India has become competitive in many fields but one field where we haven’t even made a dent is in sports. Every Olympics we send a contingent and always return home empty handed. What is ailing the Indian sporting arena?

Our domestic sporting scene is literally non-existent. There is no incentive or encouragement for a person who wants to excel in sport. Look at other countries, they encourage sports so much. They have domestic leagues which pay their personnel so much money/fame that people dream of becoming a sports hero. In India, we have only few companies sponsoring and encouraging sports. Since we don’t have a domestic league which is dream worthy, kids don’t aspire to become sportsmen and parents discourage sports because there is no future in it. How are we going to change this scene? Who is going to take the initiative?

I think the government should help in developing a sports culture but big corporates like the Tatas, Brilas and Reliances etc should provide the sponsorship. The corporates should fulfill their social responsibility. We need to follow the same structure as we currently do for cricket.
