Should we go in for a national identification number?

Many of the advanced countries issue a unique identification number called social security number (SSN). The government maintains a file on everyone who has a SSN. In this file every significant transaction associated with that particular individual is recorded. These entries include credit/debit details, criminal records, identity cards, tax records etc. Every time you need to do a major transaction/activity this file is checked by the authority involved in the transaction.

Indian government also issues many IDs such as the voter id, pan card, ration card etc. Recently some banks have joined to maintain a credit report involving bank transactions. Criminal records are maintained separately. Last week there was an announcement about a new ID for people who invest in mutual funds. All this is only causing more confusion .The most comprehensive ID has been the voter ID. I think there should be an effort to integrate all this information under one ID that being a national ID. This ID will be used in all major transactions making people accountable for their actions in life .Today since we don’t have a system like that we have so much corruption and malpractice .
